Ralph L. Whitley, PE
Ralph Whitley is a firm principal and mechanical engineer. Prior to joining STW in 2010, Ralph worked in the design-build arena where he led HVAC design for manufacturing clients like Toyota Boshoku, Link Belt, FedEx, and Nestle. This work taught him how to bear-down and do hardcore estimating of mechanical and plumbing systems.
His spoken passion for complicated projects is complimented by his ability to think creatively and engineer functional, maintainable, and sustainable HVAC systems for owners. Ralph is highly detailed. He is known for defining project success early on and delivering on it every step of the way.
Ralph thinks creatively to engineer innovative strategies to achieve energy efficient systems cost effectively. He is the first engineer in Kentucky to design and install a Chilled Beam system. For STW, he designed our first ice storage system and is the engineer of record for two net zero-ready buildings.
He has a personal interest in historic, downtown buildings which is why his favorite STW projects incorporate adaptive re-use. His interests include sand volleyball and UK Football. In his community, Ralph is a member of Lexington Rotary Club and a 2016 graduate of Leadership Lexington.

After graduating from the University of Kentucky, Whitley’s first job was working for STW. Seven short years later, he became partner in 2010. As an engineer, a project manager, and now a leader, he is constantly raising the bar to make us stronger in every role. He keeps STW’s staff focused on quality and strengthening the fundamentals of good engineering.
Whitley’s prompt responses to clients and colleagues is hard to match. He leads STW’s team through some of our most challenging projects and doesn’t shy away from problems when they occur. He confidently pulls in the resources, solutions, and technical muscle required to get the project team back on track.
A native of Cynthiana, Whitley’s hometown roots are rich. Growing up amongst Kentucky’s most beautiful farmlands is a big reason why he always finds a way to be outdoors. Backpacking, skiing, kayaking, and hiking are when he is happiest and most relaxed. James Troutman, PE
James joined STW in 2017 to lead our Louisville office and was named Principal in October of 2019. As a graduate of Trinity High School and the University of Louisville SPEED school, James is a true Louisvillian. This local connection paired with his humility and sensible approach are why clients like having him onboard their projects.
His mixed background in consulting engineering and equipment sales explains why he is one of the most personable engineers you’ll meet. He’s polite, brainy, and humored by quirky one-liners. His career experience taught him that there can be many solutions to every problem. To find the right one, he applies his knack for listening to truly hear the expectations of the people and the project.
For our industry, James serves on the board for ASHRAE and is a past ACE mentor. At the office, you’ll find him playing his guitar and collaborating on better and different ways to manage. At home, his life is centered around spending time with his wife (and high school sweetheart) Ashlee, and their two sons, Evan and Cole.

Robbie Bottoms, PE
Robbie joined STW in 2013 from Clotfelter/Samokar where he gained wonderful experience working closely with architectural, landscape, and civil consultants. This experience is why Robbie is solution-oriented, detailed, and precise. He is an excellent engineer and listener.
Working on projects for our K-12 and higher education owners are his favorite. He’s witnessed first-hand the impact a new or renovated building can have on students. When he sees the results in test scores, quality of education, and the overall student experience, it makes all the time, thought, and commitment well worth it.
Robbie is busy raising two girls with his wife, Molly. It’s that time in his life when it’s hard to fit in new things. That’s why his recurring New Year’s Resolution is to try or learn something new every year. So far that’s landed him on slopes, playing the piano, tasting peanut butter (he hated it), white water rafting, beginner woodworking, and fallando en mejorar su español.

Carter Boyd
Carter joined our team in 2023 and assists our senior mechanical staff with the design, specification, estimation, and construction administration of mechanical systems.
Engineering is special to Carter because it combines two ways of thinking: practicality and creativity. Carter is passionate about using his brain to employ practical facts to create something new that improves the lives of people. He gets excited to wake up and serve the community around him day in and day out, and that is what makes the projects that give back to people his favorite projects.
Flexibility helps Carter contribute in a unique way to any team that he is a part of. Whether that flexibility has taken shape as serving in new ways at Church, learning something new on the farm, or working with STW. He loves viewing problems from a different angle to find a solution with the tools available.
Outside of normal work hours, Carter can be found spending time with his soon to be wife, Whitney. Joshua Cairell
Nicknamed “Batman,” Josh’s organization and preparedness make him an asset to every project team. For every meeting, Josh thinks through the desired outcome and the role STW plays in getting there. This is also why Josh thinks through questions upfront and always has your project’s specs and drawings available for mark-up on his tablet.
The hard projects – whether a complicated renovation or a challenging mechanical system design – are his favorite. He likes doing the work that keeps him learning, asking better questions, and makes him a better designer for your next project.
Prior to joining STW in 2006, Josh worked at his family’s business, Gentry Mechanical System, as an Auto CADD technician. This is where he first developed his “whatever it takes attitude” and it’s been engrained in him ever since.
When he isn’t cleaning his car, he’s most happy playing with his dog (or yours!) and eating Sunday dinner with his family.

Brandon Slusher, PE
For STW’s education, commercial and municipal clients, Brandon creatively engineers mechanical systems by implementing new technologies and energy savings strategies. His passion for design comes through when the client’s mission is integrated into their building. That’s why he strives to understand client’s objectives and takes care to involve the client in the development of straight-forward mechanical designs. While faith-based and community-focused projects are often his favorites, he has a heart for K-12 and Higher Education projects due to his wife’s career as an educator.
Brandon’s colleagues appreciate his positive attitude, patience and kindness. As part of STW’s team since graduating from UK in 2009, he has learned that first-rate responsiveness and collaboration are important to the success of any project.
Brandon and his wife, Sarah, live in Nicholasville with their young children, Emma and Abe. As a father, deacon, church worship leader and home DIYer, he enjoys working to make sure others are happy and well cared for. When all other work ceases, he can be found working on the family truck or picking at a new guitar riff.
