The Steeplechase Elementary School project is a new 81,890 square foot facility that just celebrated its grand opening this past week. The school is located in Walton and is Boone County’s 15th elementary school that has opened for this year. The project initially broke ground in March 2020 with a total cost of $26,092,869.
The school has many futuristic features strategically designed to enhance collaborative learning among students. One of the most notable examples, the “nucleus” space, serves as a cooperative powerhouse to encourage students to work together to reach solutions to dynamic lessons taught by teachers. There is also a centrally-located courtyard that provides additional collaboration space with a themed including large models of the planets in our solar system as well as a space-themed playground for the preschool classes. The school is truly one large interactive learning environment. The students have also recorded descriptions of each space on a YouTube channel that is accessible via QR codes mounted at the entry to each new space.
Steeplechase incorporates the latest technology for LED lighting and digital controls while achieving aesthetically exciting areas for learning and collaboration. The school is beaming with advanced IP-based CCTV security, intrusion protection, intercom/paging, classroom sound reinforcement, and large venue sound systems / large format screens for the Gymnasium, Cafeteria, and central Nucleus.
The building’s mechanical system is a geothermal water-source heat pump system served by a well field consisting of 192 wells at 400’ bore depth. The building mechanical systems and their controls were designed with an emphasis on both energy efficiency and low maintenance costs. Attention to the visual impact of duct systems was also needed to condition large collaboration and presentation areas throughout the school.
STW is proud to have provided MEP Engineering services to contribute to the new learning facility that encourages young generations to prosper for years to come.
