Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) broke ground on October 22, 2020 for a new elementary school in the Dixie Highway corridor in Louisville, which is intended to merge Wilkerson and Watson Lane elementary schools.
Students who would have attended Wilkerson and Watson Lane elementary schools will go to the new school, which is scheduled to open in August 2022.
The $17 million school is being constructed on land right behind Wilkerson Elementary School, and is the third built in the past 10 years by JCPS. The 82,532 square foot school design will include two stories of classrooms, as well as dedicated rooms for art, computer, media, and plenty of open spaces for collaborative learning. It even has space for outdoor classes.
The building will have energy efficient windows, lighting, and plumbing, as well as Geothermal heating and cooling. The plan has also set aside a line of mature trees already standing on the plot, which will be retained and protected during construction so that the final school has existing green space.
The new school has not yet been named.
